Election FAQ:
If the ballot issue passes in April, what would the funds from the sales tax increase be used for?
Funds from the sales tax
increase will be used specifically for Streets and Street fund issues such as crack
fill, pothole repairs, overlay, chipseal.
The hope is if this passes,
we can elimate the $4.78 fee currently collected for streets. This
current fee brings in approximately $60,000 per year, which does not even
provide enough funds to overlay one street block. The Town currently has over
12 miles of streets to maintain. At
current rates the overlay for one street such as First Avenue from Jackie Ann
to Hwy 14 (approximately ½ mile) in Town will run around $1,000,000, which
exceeds the entire fund balance of the street fund. Upkeep will be budgeted in a rotating fashion
with funds available. The sales
tax amount would be beneficial to upkeep the streets without being the full
burden of residents, as transient visitors through town would also pay this
tax.
When would the increase go into effect?
If the ballot issue passes it will go into effect July 1, 2026.
Why do you need this increase when you already get such a large mill levy?
The Town of Ault gets a mill levy of 6.727 mill per year, one of the lowest in the state, which equates to $303,914 in funds for the 2026 budget. The large mill levy of 59.978 mills for those who live in the metro district does NOT come to the Town, the metro district receives those funds, none of which are used for streets within the metro district.
If I have questions about the sales tax increase, who can I talk to?
Please feel free to contact the Mayor or the Town Administrator. You can email your questions as well to sharon@aultcolorado.gov.
Can I just mark the Notice of Ballot and turn it in to cast my vote?
The Notice of Ballot is a Tabor requirement to inform voters that there will be a tax issue on the ballot. It cannot and will not be counted as a ballot.
How or where do I vote? The 2026 Ault Municipal Election is a poll-ballot election.
